Breakthrough Made in ±320kW HV DC Cable in China

On October 26, the ±320kW Cable Cross-linked Polyethylene DC Power Cable, independently researched by ZTT, smoothly passed the new product expert appraisal organized by the Economy and Information Technology Commission of Jiangsu Province, indicating that China’s first ±320kW HV DC power cable has been successfully developed by ZTT. Meanwhile, other two new products from the company passed the appraisal: the ±200kV Cross-linked Polyethylene Insulated Fiber Compound DC Undersea Power Cable and the Three-Core 110kV Cross-linked Polyethylene Insulated Fiber Compound Undersea Power Cable. 


As unanimously decided by the expert appraisal committee on which Professor Yang Liming, a senior expert in the field of HV cable, was the leading member, ZTT has carried out research on insulation material on the basis of temperature and electric field characteristics of space charge and DC conductivity, in addition to research on innovative and proprietary structure simulation design, deaeration process design, technical solution to factory coupling, large-length DC undersea cable pressure test, etc.; its products show excellent electrical and mechanical performance; it is strong in the R&D of HV DC power cable and 3-core AC undersea cable and has a solid capability in mass production and supply. The three products of ZTT are as technologically advanced as those by its international peers and can be used to substitute their imported counterparts, thus promoting the technological advancement in the Chinese undersea cable industry and the progress in long-distance low-loss power transmission technology in China. 


Besides, this appraisal of UHV DC and AC undersea cable and land cable series of products has stirred a lot of interest among senior experts in the HV cable industry. The appraisal committee was composed of nearly 20 experts and leaders from various institutions such as China Electric Power Research Institute, State Grid Electric Power Research Institute, China Southern Grid Electric Power Research Institute, Shanghai Electric Cable Research Institute, Shanghai Jiao Tong University, TICW, Electrical Equipment Inspection and Testing Center for Electric Power Industry, HYDROCHINA Huadong Engineering Corporation Limited, Fujian Yongfu Engineering Consulting Co., Ltd., State Grid Beijing Economy and Technology Research Institute, China Southern Power Grid Guangdong, State Grid Fujian, China Three Gorges New Energy, China Huaneng New Energy, CGN Wind Energy, China Electric Power Equipment and Technology.


According to Xue Jianling, general manager of ZTT, his company has, by seizing the opportunity of development and upholding its strategy and culture of “technological innovation and fine manufacturing”, completed the R&D and mass production of HV DC cable series of products and made breakthrough after breakthrough. Based on the “Large Wind Farm Flexible DC Access Technology R&D Project” in China Southern Grid Nan’ao Island 863 Plan, it undertook the R&D of China’s first ±160kV Fiber Compound DC Undersea Power Cable; based on State Grid’s Zhoushan Multi-terminal Flexible DC Demonstration Project, it undertook the development and supply of the ±200kV Fiber Compound DC Undersea Power Cable with the longest distance and the largest section. ZTT is the first Chinese company that has successfully researched and developed ±320kV HV DC power cable with the highest voltage level and largest transmission capacity in flexible DC transmission applications worldwide; it is the only company that has passed all-performance testing conducted by the two authoritative institutions – TICW and Electric Power Industry Electrical Equipment Inspection and Testing Center, fully demonstrating the correctness of the ±320kV HV DC power cable system in terms of processes and its high product reliability. 


According to the technology R&D team led by Professor Xie Shuhong, senior engineer of ZTT, the need for long-distance transmission via power cable has been increasing with the development of offshore wind power, centralized power supply for offshore oil and gas platforms, and island power network development on a large scale. “Now, the single-core or 3-core 220kV AC undersea cable, 3-core 11kV AC undersea cable, ±320kV or ±200kV DC undersea cable are the most feasible solutions. This series of new products launched by ZTT aims to develop DC power transmission technology, provide a ultra-long distance power transmission solution for a new-generation DC network project, and adapt to the requirements of China for new energy and maritime development. Therefore, they are significant socioeconomically.
