11th Five-Year National Science and Technology Project “UHV Power Transmission and Transformation System Development & Demonstration” Passes Acceptance Test

Recently, 11th Five-Year National Science and Technology Project “UHV Power Transmission and Transformation System Development & Demonstration” Passed Acceptance Test in Beijing.


Since the world’s first UHV AC/DC project was completed in China and put to service after four years of efforts, China has mastered the key technology for 1000kV AC and ±800kV DC projects, independently developed key 1000kV AC and ±800kV DC distribution equipment, and applied them in actual projects. In key technology, a series of research endeavors have been made in 1000kW UHV AC and ±800kV UHV DC system operations control, overvoltage protection and insulation coordination, external insulation and corona characteristics, electromagnetic environment and wireless station protection, pole and tower structure and its basic forms, major loop optimization and design, and main equipment and engineering design specifications. In terms of key equipment R&D, a breakthrough has been made in such equipment as the GIS, transformer, reactor, bushing, and lightning arrester for the 1000kW UHV AC system and core technologies for equipment such as the ±800kV UHV DC converter valve, converter transformer, dry smoothing reactor, control and protection. The developed equipment has been deployed on the southeastern Shanxi (Changzhi) – Nanyang – Jingmen 1000kW UHV AC Experimentation and Demonstration Project and Yunnan-Guangdong ±800kV UHV DC Distribution Project and been running smoothly.


The breakthrough in UHV transmission technology in China has laid a solid foundation for long-distance, large-capacity, and low-loss power transmission. The technology is of great strategic significance and has an enormous potential in its application in achieving an optimized nationwide power resource allocation, providing green and reliable clean energy for economic development, and ensure national energy security in China.
